Elphinstone Road station renamed Prabhadevi Station with effect from July 19

It’s not Elphinstone Road station anymore! Call it Prabhadevi instead. Western Railway has changed the name of Elphinstone Road suburban railway station to Prabhadevi Station, effective from midnight of July 18.

From 12:00 am, July 19, Thursday, Elphinstone Road station, which made news after a deadly stampede on staircase of the FOB claimed 14 lives and injured several in September 2017, will be known as Prabhadevi station.

On Dt- 29th Sept 2017, At least 22 people were killed and 39 others injured at Elphinstone railway station's foot over bridge. The stampede took place on foot overbridge linking Elphinstone Road and Parel suburban railway stations.

The station code of Prabhadevi station will be PBHD, the WR said in a statement.
The decision to rechristen the station was taken last year in July, a few days after Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.


The station was initially named after Lord Elphinstone, who was the Governor of Bombay Presidency from 1853 to 1860. It has now been renamed in honour of a local deity.

In December 2017, the Maharashtra legislature had approved a Bill to rename Elphinstone Road station, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) and Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.
